The client need.
A private residential client on the border of the Berkeley Hills was going through a difficult season with her health. Unable to use her bathtub inside, she wanted to reclaim her existing outdoor shower space. It had the right bones: a clawfoot tub, the redwood above, a stone patio… but the walls were peeling, and lifeless. She wanted wildflowers to bring her joy. She wanted something cheerful and uplifting, but calming and peaceful at the same time. She wanted her little space to become an oasis.
The creative solution.
The client had seen a botanical sketchbook study on my website and her response was simple: can you put that on my wall? The color palette was then developed in close conversation with her, responding to the tones inside her home and the colors she was drawn to. The botanical forms were drawn from my own obsession with the way plants cast shadows: that one unrepeatable silhouette shaped by the angle of the sun, the wind, the way I'm holding a stem as I sketch it.
